I value craftsmanship. People who can take sheets and tubes of brass and turn them into musical instruments are doing a wonderful thing. As more and more of the things we use daily are mass-produced to modest quality standards, the accomplishment of a master craftsman stands out even more.
I also value the personal touch in the creation of music. I can’t build a trumpet, but I do compose and perform music. I value new music and live performance as well as excellent performance of the repertoire.
There are many fine trumpet builders today. But building instruments by hand is not an easy way to make a living. If there aren’t trumpet players who want to buy these fine instruments the craft will eventually die away. I think that would be a sad thing and a loss to the world.
A vibrant and active performing community is essential. It gives players opportunities to perform and grow as musicians. It also gives them a reason to search for and invest in the special instrument that helps them express their artistry and creativity. This keeps the trumpet craftsmen in business, and maintains the art of spinning bells, honing pistons and building leadpipes that play in tune with perfect resistance.
My goal is to contribute what I can to ensuring that the skilled, human crafts of making musical instruments and music will endure.
I’d love to hear your thoughts on this. Email me at galen@takata-trumpets.com
